Will all of the Haters please SHUT UP!!!

Tue Apr 21, 2009, 5:21 PM
Hi all, it's me again.

I know I haven't been online for about a month or so, but this time it has nothing to do with work. It has to do with something that's been going on here on deviantart and I've kept quiet about it for far too long. After reading a journal entry related to this reason, I've pretty much decided enough is enough and I need to speak out. What is this something?

Twilight Haters.

For the past several months, all I've seen is this epidemic of Twilight Haters everywhere I look. Now whether you've read the book or not, like it or hate it, everyone does have the right to their own opinion. The thing, however, is how far you take that opinion before you start to sound ignorant. This especially goes towards people who dislike anything to do with the series and will go as far as any flamer/hater will go and make fun of anything or anyone who likes the series. I'll see comments on Twilight fan art that insult the artist for simply liking the books or journal entries making fun of Stephenie Meyer and Twilight fans on anything someone might have said against the series or what have you.

Whatever the case maybe, a hater is still a hater by any other name. If you don't like something, common sense should dictate that you simply don't review it or comment on it, let alone make fun of people (and make them feel bad) for liking something you don't like. It's called an opinion for a reason, if we all liked the same thing, the world would be kinda boring.

Everyone has something they hate, something they dislike, whether it's a TV show, anime, comic books, manga, cartoons, movies, or whatever else is out there, we all hate something. It's how you handle that hate that shows what kind of person you are. For example, I despise Spongebob, anything having to do with that cartoon makes me cringe and I consider it a form of mental torture. There are those out there who do like this cartoon for whatever reason and I'm sure there's fan art out there on this site. I don't go around telling those artists or those fans that they're wrong to like the show, it's their opinion and they have every right to it.

Spongebob not good enough of an example? Okay, I'll give you another one of my dislikes. Anne Rice.

For those reading this who are fans of her, I don't dislike her writing style since I have never picked up any of her novels and thus, it would be wrong of me to critique something I've never read. Why do I dislike her then? Because she banned all fan fiction based on her work, which in turn, bans the fan from expressing their love for her work in a creative way.

Now I have never said "All Anne Rice fans are stupid", but I have pointed out this fact to an artist I watch who has slowly been turning into a Hater because of her dislike for Stephenie Meyer. I was not nasty about it anyway and in turn, the artist was snarky in her response and has not replied to any other comment I put up in her journal entries or art work since. She was the one who wrote the recent journal entry that trigged the one I write to you now. I replied to her once again, asking if maybe she might consider the fact she maybe taking this hatred too far. When (if) I get a response, I'll update this entry with it.

Which leads me to another thing about the Twilight Haters that has been getting to me. Alot of the intelligent and talented artists I admire and have a great deal of respect for are now turning into malicious Haters. Before, they themselves use to talk about how cruel Haters were and how they needed to use their time in a more productive fashion. But since the Twilight series has become more popular, these very artists are turning into the very Haters they use to talk about. They draw the hate-art for the series and mock fans of the series, calling them stupid and accusing them of not knowing what good fiction is. Again, the concept of opinion comes into play. We all like something that someone else will hate. I'm a die hard fan of authors such as Jim Butcher, J.K. Rowling, L.J. Smith, and other authors who I feel do a fantastic job at writing. Now people out there may recognize these authors and have a dislike for them, but once again, it's a matter of opinion.

Another thing people seem to hate about the series is the human falling in love with a vampire concept. I hate to be the one to break this to ya people, but Stephenie Meyer is NOT the first author to do this. One of the authors I mentioned above, L.J. Smith, has written numerous novels on the subject, but there are always more to those novels than just the forbidden love aspect. One of the greatest examples of her well developed characters is a vampire by the name of Damon Salvatore from her "Vampire Diaries" series. For those of you who hate Edward Cullen, you will love Damon. He enjoys being a vampire to the fullest extent, he knows what he is and is proud of what he is and is not bothered by the drinking of the blood of humans to satisfy his hunger. He does not glitter, but he can walk into the sunlight because of stone he wears that protects all vampires from the sun. He type of vampire is more towards the traditional kind, he has fangs, wears all black, needs an invite to get into someone's home (which is played with in the book), and so on.

As I have stated before, there is also the blatant disrespect and cruelty towards fans of the Twilight series. These new haters won't take anyone whose read and liked the book seriously if they make a book suggestion and insults them to no end. Tell me, since when was bullying considered a good thing among geeks and freaks? Last time I checked, Haters and bullies were in the same category.

Another thing to consider doing the whole “Well Stephenie Meyer can’t write for crap and so and so writer is a million times better!” attitude. I’m sorry, but when you start talking like that, you open your self to have the writer you love and worship criticized and insulted by someone who hates that writer. If you can’t take it, then maybe you shouldn’t talk about a writer someone else likes just because you don’t.

Then of course there are everybody’s favorite thing in fandom, fantards. They are everywhere, they exist in every form that has a fan base there is, including the Twilight series. No matter what you’re a fan of, there is always a fantard to make true fans look like morons. Naruto and Bleach fans especially know what I’m talking about. And let’s not forget a good deal of these fantards are instigators for things such as Shipping Wars. If you don’t support the same shipping that they do, automatically you’re idiot in their world. Now for Twilight fantards, one little critique on the series and they are at your throat in a heartbeat. Here’s the thing, not everyone who reads Twilight is a blind little fantard. As I have stated before, there are intelligent fans out there who know there are flaws in the series and I have even talked to a few Twilight fans who still enjoy the series and admit flat out that Bella is a Mary-Sue.

One thing I want to make clear is that just because someone dislikes Twilight doesn’t automatically mean they are a Hater. Another artist I watch dislikes the series and made a little comic about it, yet she acknowledges that not everyone who likes Twilight is a fantard and will still take their book suggestions as long as it’s not the Twilight series itself. I honestly wish more people acted like her because she seems to one of the few anti-Twilight people out there who realizes that acting like a Hater will make you no better than the people who hate on your artwork and that there are intelligent people out there who have read and like Twilight.

Among all of this anti-Twilight chaos, I’ve noticed one little thing which I find to be very amusing. The Twilight Haters rant and rave about how horrible they think Twilight is, yet I haven’t heard anything about her other novel.

Yes, that’s right, Stephenie Meyer has another novel besides the Twilight series.

It’s called The Host and all I’m gonna say is that if you want make any judgments on it, read it first cuz I’m not gonna give ya any commentary on it.

And my opinion of the Twilight series? No comment. Those who know me already know what my opinion is and I do not want to justify the Twilight Haters or the Twilight fantards in anyway, shape, or form. I do, however, want the opinions of the people out there reading this journal entry. Do you think the Haters are taking their hatred too far? Are any artists you know and love becoming ignorant Haters of the series? I want the opinions of fans, haters, and those who merely dislike the series. And tell people you know about this journal entry and link them to it, I want comments and I want to know if I’m the only one out there who feels this way.

Most haters do take things do far-like when I see someone say Stephenie Meyer is the worst writer ever or something like that(makes me want to point them to Eragon and Christopher Paolini and say 'beat that', but that's a different story).

Actually, something I don't like about pretentious haters that don't like Twilight but still love vampires is when they say 'I liked vampires before Twilight'. :| They're pretty much saying saying that they liked vampires before they were popular, but that's impossible as vampires have been popular since before Dracula...

At this point, I'm neutral on Twilight. :| Read The Host, still neutral.

I do agree with almost all of this. I do like the Twilight series, but I am far from being obssessed with it myself...yes I am making a manga of it, but it really all started because my sisters wanted me to make it for them. I respect anyone and everyone's opinion. I go by what I've been taught growing up, "If you don't have anything nice to say to a person, then don't say anything at all."

Proud Anti, chiming in.

Anti, not Hater. I heartily dislike Twilight. I have numerous problems with it from a literary and personal standpoint. I am terribly annoyed by the hype (why does it need an entire rack, front and back, in Hot Topic? And Watchem only gets a tiny side rack? LAME). And, yes, the fantards are my biggest problems (Twitards, we call them. Or Twazis for the extremely fanatical ones. And then there are the diehard TwiMoms, who just scare me, flat out). It's really they who are to blame for the massively bad rep Twilight has.

Now, that being said, there are some parts of Twilight that I enjoy, mostly characters. I'm a total werewolf lover, so of course I love the wolves here (except for Sam. He can suck it. Seriously. And Jacob after his Character Derailment in Eclipse. And Quil after imprinting on Claire). Leah kicks ass. Love Leah. Leah FTW. I could go on. Seth's a lovable little goof. Rosalie is bitchtastic. And Kate and Garret had some nice banter. I thought Mike and Eric were perfectly nice. Most of the human characters were.

Most all of the characters and the basic ideas behind the story had SO MUCH potential. They really did. If handled by a different author (and this is just my personal opinion), it could have been something EPIC. Or, hell, not even a different author, but if Meyer had taken her time and plotted out the story in advance and taken more care with her characters instead of just blowing through it without thinking (which she admits to doing), it could have been a lot better. As it is, for me it's just fluff, and while I won't infringe on anyone's right to read and enjoy fluff, it's not my speed. I need something deeper.

A Twilight fan who I became involved in a debate in online (over imprinting; oh, man, do not get me started on imprinting if you don't want an earful) asked me why I would analyze a book so deeply that I didn't like (actually, she phrased it in a FAR more passive-aggressive and accusatory manner, but she apologized in her very next comment; sometimes you just catch people on bad days). I responded, well, I'm an English major! I'm a bibliophile. I LOVE doing that. I do it to books I enjoy, as well. It's how reading is fun for me. I love reading between the lines and finding hidden character motivations and alternate interpretations of scenes and dialogue. It's mental crack. And in the case of Twilight, it's really the only way I enjoy it. The surface story bores me. The way it becomes interesting to me is to look deeper and find all the strange, unfortumate (and I'm certain very unintentional) implications buried underneath. A much darker story forms that way, and THAT'S the story I enjoy. (Hey, I never claimed to not be weird. ;)) And I'm amazed by the phenomenon the series has caused and have researched it extensively. It's very odd: I really... kinda hate Twilight, but at the same time I find the whole thing fascinating.

Stephenie Meyer... Yeah, I admit it, I think her writing is awful. It's very juvenile, and does read like a first-timer's fanfic. But I will say that she found the perfect way to draw her target audience into the story. So kudos to that. I'd never go so far as to make personal assumptions or attacks on her (how could I? I don't know her). But I do have problems with her as a public figure (drama queen tendencies, inability to handle criticism, arrogance, a general need to put on her big girl pants). But I can't say I hate her. I just... really dislike some things about her. If I ever say "I hate Stephenie Meyer" what I would actually mean is "I hate that Stephenie Meyer does this..." Kind of the same way I would mean I hate anyone that I don't actually know (and who isn't Hitler). Y'know?

A brief time out for this: OMG I can't stand Anne Rice for the very same reasons! The sad thing is, I'm fairly certain I'd enjoy her writing, but I refuse to pay money to read them because I won't support someone who is such a snot to her fans. It's some of the same reasons I won't actually buy Twilight (all my infomration comes from filched copies and from a CRAP TON of research). Meyer seems rather disrespectful towards her fans sometimes, and that grates on me. (Get over it and finish Midnight Sun already! Don't punish the fans for something someone you know did!)

So... Yeah. I'm an Anti. I joined TwilightSucks.com so I could be a part of a Twilight-centric forum that actually allowed criticism of the books. I like being an Anti. It's fun. It's fun to mock the books and discuss the flaws and the WTF? moments. But I try not to be an asshole about it, y'know? I'm not ashamed of my opinions and will express them in my own journal, when asked directly by another person, or in response to a post that explicitly or indirectly asks for opinions (like yours), and will make no apology for them. But I'm not going to go trolling people's art or fic posts just to be a dick. I don't see the appeal in insulting random strangers. That's trolling, and trolling is rather fail. And I've got better things to do.

Now if I see a piece of "Anyone who hates Twilight is stupid and evil!!11" art or fic, I might, depending on my mood, feel the need to defend myself. But usually not, as generally anyone who would post that is a Hater of a different sort, and any intelligent thing I could say won't change their opinion. A Hater is a Hater, no matter what they choose to hate. They're always going to take it too far, and they're never going to admit any fault. They're just jackasses, and unless they make personal takes on me or my friends, I usually tend to ignore them.

Personally, I haven't noticed many particularly nasty Twilight Haters. We've got a few assholes on TwilightSucks, certainly, but generally most of the Antis I've seen aren't the trolling and flaming type. We keep the ranting to our own forum. I haven't personally encountered any fantards online, though I've seen plenty secondhand. In RL, though, all the fans I've personally encountered have been perfectly pleasant people. I've personally dealt with three, one hyperactive, teenage Twihard (what we call the diehard, mildly obsessive, gushing fans who still don't get all nasty about it), and two older Twilighters (the sane, intelligent fans). One of those was a sweet girl from my English classes, and the other was the girlfriend of the manager of the restuarant where my friends and I play trivia, and we hit it off bigtime. She loves Twilight, I hate it, and we couldn't stop talking about it. There's going to be a Twilight trivia night closer to the release of New Moon, and we've agreed to join forces to win that night (we're usually on different teams), since between us we know everything. We've got some Twilighters on the TS forums, too, fans who want a place to be able to talk about some of the flaws without being attacked or banhammered and/or some folks who were fans when the book first came out and are annoyed by the fantards and the hype. It really is possible for us to get along, and anyone on either side who hinders this is just a waste of time.

Um... wow. TLDR much? ^^; Sorry about how long it is. I just like the opportunity to discuss these things with sane fans.

Oh! And I know about The Host! :D Read some about it, but haven't read it. Don't think I will. The whole "other awareness taking over your body" thing really creeps me. And I don't really like aliens. And I get tired of Meyer's "Humans suck" theme that she likes to put in her works (she's admitted to being anti-human). Her opinion, but I don't subscribe.

I've heard of some of the things she wants to write about next. She's working on mermaids (though she's calling them sirens; though she's not the first person to confuse those two creatures, so that's understandable) who eat humans "for moral reasons". Um... Okay. Whatever. Her book. But what bugs me is she calls them "cannibals" when what she means is "man-eaters". Those words are not the same! English nerd rage!! *flail*

I share many of your opinions in this article. As you know, I read 10 chapters. Then stopped. I really tried, but I just couldn't handle it.

 i have to say i am mighty impressed with both your and Rei-hime's opinions because i strongly agree with both of them in that the haters(to put this way simply) are hating to much and the lovers are loving way to much.

i myself could rant for hours about his topic-altho i hate to do it in type- mostly about the fact that people beleive stephanie meyer and the Twilight series the be the "best book ever" which i think is throughly ridiculous, she is a first time writer and while i personally think the book was good and fun to read i hate it when people say that "she is an amazing author and no one can beat her" (especially when they have read a total of ten books in there lives.. which probaly gets to me the most) i beleive Meyer i a good writer with alot to work on.

sorry my mind just went blank.. anyway though the think that bugs me the most with twilighters(fans) and haters of twilight is when either proclaim it the best book in the entire world or the haters who in general havent even read it and still hate it. i mean your gunna hate somthing please have the decency to try it first! i have people from my school come up to me asking if i have read it(i have when it first came out, before it was popular) and when i reply they gush about how it's the best and the greatest. i then tell them NO it is not eh best or the greatest(in my opinion)of course they go off their rocker and try to insist that it IS the best.. gah i hate it..

I really have to stop writing cuz my mind is currently scattered and i think i'm typing the same thing over and over again.. also please excuse any typing errors, my computer does not seem to work with this site well and when i try to type things it will skip and add letters.. i don't know why.. anyway have a good day and i hope someone liked/agreed to my opinion! :D

I dislike Anne Rice for he same reason as you, if she want that fans respect her and her work, she must respect her fans too! and she drop his fantasy books for God :/. Maybe she can write good but she is not a good as Tolkien,Lewis or other fantasy writers, she just write Best Sellers >_>
